Stel dat er iemand totaal gestrest en over de rooie bij je binnenkomt. Wat kun je hem of haar dan het beste aanbieden, behalve natuurlijk een luisterend oor? Je geeft zo iemand geen koffie, koffie is niet om te kalmeren maar om op te peppen. Is thee beter? Je verwacht van niet, want in thee zit ook cafeïne.[1] Maar thee bevat nog een andere stof. Die stof heet theanine, en daar zou je juist van kalmeren. Die theanine zit in gewone thee en in groene thee, maar in groene thee zit meer.[2]

Chinezen en Japanners denken al eeuwen dat groene thee ontspannend werkt, maar als dat soort volkswijsheden grondig wordt getest blijft er vaak niet veel van over. Het moet dus wetenschappelijk onderzocht worden, en dat is gedaan, bij muizen en bij mensen.

Bij gestreste muizen lijkt die theanine uit groene thee de stress inderdaad te verminderen.[3] Maar een muis is geen mens, en in onderzoek bij mensen is het effect nogal twijfelachtig. Sommige onderzoekers dachten een effect te zien op de elektrische activiteit van de hersenen. Maar erg duidelijk was dat niet.[4] En waar het uiteindelijk om gaat is of mensen zich minder gestrest voelen.

Nou, dat effect van theanine op stress bij mensen is een paar keer onderzocht en er kwam niet echt iets spectaculairs uit.[5] Bovendien kregen de proefpersonen in die studies in één keer tien keer zoveel theanine als een theedrinker in een hele dag binnenkrijgt uit thee.[6]

Het verhaal over groene thee en theanine tegen stress kreeg een maand geleden de doodsklap. Toen maakte de Europese Voedsel Autoriteit zijn oordeel over theanine en stress bekend.[7] Volgens deze onafhankelijke Europese wetenschappers is het effect op stress niet bewezen. Dat betekent dat reclame over theanine of thee en stress binnen een paar jaar verboden gaat worden.

Als iemand totaal gestrest bij je binnenkomt, mag je hem of haar nog best een kopje thee geven, want suggestie kan ook helpen. Maar ik denk dat aandacht geven toch het beste helpt.

[6] In experimenten met mensen kregen de proefpersonen 200 tot 250 milligram theanine in één keer. Het gehalte in theeblaadjes is 1 tot 10 milligram per gram, zie voetnoot 2, hierboven. Een theezakje met 1.5 gram groene thee voor 1 kopje bevat dus 1,5 tot 15 milligram theanine. Voor 200 mg heb je dan 13 tot 133 theezakjes nodig.
De Duitse overheid (Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung) schatte de normale inneming van theanine in Japan, waar veel groene thee wordt gedronken, op ca 20 milligram per dag.
